European Bulletin of Social Psychology 29,3 (November 2017)

Editorial

Dear colleagues,
I hope you have had a fine summer and that the energy boost from our great General meeting in Granada still invigorates your thoughts and work. With the fall rapidly turning into winter (at least in the northern part of the world), it is again time for an update and information about our activites.

In this volume of the EBSP, we have two highly topical contributions to our Opinions & Perspectives section (O & P). The first is a piece by Fouad Bou Zeineddine based on his presentation at the round-table discussion “Building Support for Social Psychologists at Risk” during our Granada GM. This symposium, lead by our former president Manuela Barreto, was initiated to put focus on social psychologists across the world that are facing increasingly hard times; some fleeing from conflict and war, some facing religious or political persecution, others caught up in travel bans and other exclusionary measures. The EASP, in conjunction with ISPP, has taken a number of measures in responses to specific crises, most notably in Turkey, but the question is how we go further to generate new, effective forms of solidarity. In his contribution, Fouad presents main aspects of marginalization, as well as proposals to alleviate these, suggested in his interviews with social psychologists from and in developing countries. I trust it that you will take time to read this urgent piece thoroughly. The proposals include several excellent ideas for practical solutions to increase connectivity and inclusion, but also address attitudinal issues that aggravate asymmetries in opportunities and resources. We also have a very interesting contribution by poll expert John Curtice. His piece gives a sobering and enlightening inside perspective on why the polling institutes have recently failed to predict important electoral outcomes (e.g., Brexit, the Trump election). The text provides invaluable keys to make sense of this issue, and deserves attention from everyone concerned with the recent mismatches between predicted and actual electoral outcomes.

The situation in Turkey is worsening, and the repression on academics is growing. Our colleagues in Turkey are facing law suits for Peace declaration signatories, and both their families and the general population are continuously facing oppression and danger. This bulletin provides an update of the situation provided by the Social and Political Platform of Turkey. Active support to academics in Turkey is crucial, and we strongly invite you to consider the suggestions included in the letter on how to do this.

In the rest of the bulletin, you will find other information, for example, about the membership and membership fees, as well as the usual sections including inspiring reports on past meetings supported by EASP, on members’ activities that were supported by grants from the Association, and new members.

Lastly, if you miss the stimulating discussions with colleagues from around the world, the wine and the beauty of southern Spain, let me just remind you that you can still access pictures and movies of the Granada meeting on our website.

Best wishes
Torun Lindholm

President's Corner

Dear Members of EASP,

After six years of devoted service to the association, Manuela Barreto, Mara Cadinu, and Daniel Wigboldus have left the executive committee. The Granada General Meeting marks the start of a new executive committee. In the name of all the members of the association, we would like to thank them for all the hard work they did over the last 6 years. We all benefitted from their engagement!

The new executive committee (Jean-Claude Croizet, Ernestine Gordijn, Kai Jonas, Malgorzata Kossowska, Torun Lindholm, Monica Rubini, and Kai Sassenberg) has held its inaugural meeting. I want to use this president’s corner to share with you our thoughts about our goals EASP for the next 3 years and the resulting opportunities for you as members.

Diversity and support for regions
Diversity has been a key theme of EASP executive committees from the beginning on, but in particular for the last 6 years. We will focus on diversity within the association with special attention – but not limited to –regional diversity. To this end, we want to support social psychologist in regions of Europe in which our discipline or our association are less well represented. Under the label of RKTS (Research Knowledge Transfer Scheme), we will more intensely support members to organize workshops or networks (e.g., forming regional organizations, transfer of special research skills) for social psychologists. We are happy to support you with manpower (either personally or helping you to find speakers) but also financially. We will actively approach potential organizers. At the same time, we also invite you to approach us – not necessarily with complete proposal, but also with rough ideas or suggestions regarding measure that could help social psychology in your country, community, or field.

For future rounds of award applications, we will take even more care that diversity aspects will be taken into consideration. To this end, we have started to revise award criteria. Procedures of award committees, will likewise be adjusted.
We also will remain involved in activities supporting psychologists at risk, for example in Turkey, but also in other regions (for details see the reports below).

Mastering the challenges resulting from changes in the publication system
Over the last decade, the scientific publication system has undergone a revolution. Scientific discussions are not limited any more to major journals, but develop in open access journals, on preprint servers, blogs, social media etc. This has an impact on the scientific discourse and reduces the importance and the income generated by major journals. Given that the subscription fees collected by the publishing houses are also majorly contributing to the income of EASP, the changes in the publication system work against the financial health of EASP. It will be one of the main goals of the current executive committee to prepare EASP for upcoming changes in the publication system. We are currently financially very healthy, but we need to get prepared for what is coming. As soon as we will have developed a clear vision about the steps to be taken, we will provide you with more detailed plans.

Besides, we will take care that our association will continue to do what it was founded for: Supporting research in social psychology and the exchange between social psychologists in Europe and beyond. This has set the agenda of the association for more than five decades and it will also guide our activities. Here is what EASP offers you:

Support for members
EASP offers travel grants - for postgraduate as well as for full members – and seedcorn grants. These grants are meant to support exchange between and collaborative research of European social psychologist. Funding rates are substantially higher than in case of most other funding sources. Please make use of this opportunity!

Support for preregistered research
As one means to support changes in social psychology towards more replicability, the association supports pre-registered research. Members who have received an IPA (in principle acceptance) from peer reviewed journal, such as CRSP or one of the many other journals publishing registered reports can apply for up to € 1000 to conduct preregistered research.

Support for meetings
EASP offers support for meeting organizers. The initiative of the numerous people who have organized EASP meetings over the years has been the most important platform for the exchange between members. It is a must that half of the meeting attendees are EASP members, but apart from this requirement we are open to support different types of meetings. Thus, if you have an idea for a meeting, you should definitely consider applying for EASP support.

Beside all these activities, we are prepared to listen to you. Please contact us for issues you want us to deal with. Without your input, our willingness to act for the good of the association and its members might fail to address your vital interests and needs. Thus, please get in touch with us and tell us about crucial problems or themes that otherwise might escape our attention.

Best wishes!

Kai Sassenberg in the name of the EASP Executive Committee

Call for Organizing the 2020 EASP General Meeting

The Executive Committee calls for offers to organize and host the next General Meeting in three years time (2020). We are particularly interested in offers form countries (and parts of Europe more generally) that have not staged our most important meeting before. However the most important concern is to host a successful meeting so offers from members of the Association form all parts of Europe are very welcome and will be given full consideration at our next committee meeting.
