EASP – European Association of Social Psychology

Becoming an EASP Member

Information for prospective members

Membership Benefits

EASP membership incorporates an automatic electronic subscription to the European Journal of Social Psychology (EJSP), the European Review of Social Psychology (ERSP), the Social Psychological and Personality Science (SPPS), and the Comprehensive Results in Social Psychology (CRSP). While for environmental reasons we recommend using the online versions, full members can 'opt in' to receive the EJSP and ERSP journals in print format.

Members may also subscribe to the EASP Mailserve, which provides members with up-to-date announcements concerning EASP related issues, calls for papers for special issues, job announcements, meeting and conference announcements, requests for input into meta-analyses, etc. via email. We do not send commercial adverts or information about publications. Requests for circulation can be made here.

A further source of information, which keeps members informed about recent developments, is provided by the European Bulletin of Social Psychology (EBSP—the Association's newsletter).

Membership Duration

EASP membership runs on an annual basis for one calendar year at a time. According to our articles, membership is automatically extended to the next calendar year, unless members contact the Executive Officer before the end of November and indicate that they want to resign from the EASP. When membership is not actively cancelled but membership fees have not been paid during two subsequent years, EASP membership will be ended by the Association. Technically, the member still has to pay the fees for these two years, because they continue to receive membership benefits such as journals.

Please be aware that postgraduate membership ends as soon as the postgraduate member has been awarded their PhD. If they want to continue their EASP membership, postgraduate members need to apply for full membership right after having been awarded their PhD (or equivalent degree). In any case, postgraduate membership will end after four years (extension is possible due to certain circumstances, i.e. severe illness, parental leave).

Yearly Membership Fees

  • Full members: 96 EUR
  • Postgraduate Members: 48 EUR

For new members approved following the March deadline, membership is effective immediately and the fee is due for that calendar year. For new members approved following the September deadline, membership is effective at the beginning of the next calendar year, and the fee is also due at that time.

If you are experiencing financial hardship, you can request to pay a reduced membership fee, or apply for a fee waiver, by emailing The Executive Officer (office@easp.eu).

The membership fee can be paid online by credit card. You can also pay by bank transfer, which will incur an additional processing cost of 10 EURO. Further information is available in the members area (MyEASP).

Membership Application

The EASP is a vibrant international community of scholars and it is always keen to welcome new members. However, as the EASP is a scholarly and professional organisation, the Executive Committee have set a number of criteria that need to be met, as well as clear procedures, for gaining entry.

Full Membership

Criteria
Applicants should:

  • have been awarded a PhD (or an equivalent degree) in social psychology (or a closely related discipline) and
  • have at least one social psychological article, written in English, and published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Postgraduate Membership

Applicants should be studying for a PhD (or equivalent degree) in social psychology or a closely related discipline.

Procedure
Applicants should submit/complete:

  • an online application form
  • a short application letter
  • an up-to-date CV, and
  • two supporting recommendations from full EASP members (download below).

Please ensure that all materials are sent together with the application form before the deadline.

Please note, if the application deviates from the above criteria (e.g., because the applicant has a PhD in a cognate discipline), particular attention should be paid to grounds which justify the application.

Procedure
Applicants should submit/complete:

  • an online application form
  • a short application letter
  • an up-to-date CV, and
  • two supporting recommendations from full EASP members (download below).

Please ensure that all materials are sent together with the application form before the deadline.

Note: Applicants who cannot find full members for the recommendation letters are welcome to contact the Executive Officer who will be able to assist. Please do so with plenty of time before the application deadline.

Please be aware that postgraduate membership ends as soon as the postgraduate member has awarded their PhD or, in any case, after four years.

Future members who need advice about locating potential referees are welcome to contact the Executive Officer.

Approval by Executive Committee

Membership applications can only be considered at Executive Committee meetings. The Executive Committee usually meets twice a year, typically in April and October. When the Executive Officer is in possession of all the relevant documents (i.e., application form, curriculum vitae, two recommendation letters), the application will be considered at the next meeting of the Executive Committee of the Association.

Deadlines

Deadlines for membership applications are March 15th and September 15th, 0:00 UTC. All documents (inclduding recommendations) must have been received by that time. Although decisions about applications cannot be taken at other times of the year, those who wish to apply for membership are free to do so at any time.

One Month Notification

When an application is approved by the Executive Committee, full members are notified of the names of all applicants. If no objections are received by the Secretary within one month of publication, the applicant becomes a member of the Association.
