Welcome
Dear friends and colleagues,
We hope that you are all doing well. We are very much looking forward to
the General Meeting in Krakow and the opportunity to re-connect with each
other in person. In this edition of the bulletin, you will find further
information and links related to the General Meeting. Please keep the
conference website bookmarked for further updates about the academic
programme and associated events.
Also in this edition of the bulletin, our outgoing president Kai Jonas
shares a few words and our treasurer Nina Hansen shares an important update
on EASP finances.
You will also find a call for proposals for the 2024 special issue of
the European Journal of Social Psychology. We also warmly welcome our new
editors Marco Brambilla, Kim Peters, and Kai Epstude, who will begin their
term in January 2024.
In the coming weeks, we will be asking you to vote in the election for
three new members of the EASP Executive Committee. We have gratefully
received five applications. Please take the time to read their profiles and
vision statements. More information about the election process will follow
shortly.
As part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing diversity and inclusion,
we are launching a survey to learn more about your experiences both as a
member of the EASP and in the field of social psychology more broadly.
Please take the time to complete the survey, and we will report the survey
results during the General Meeting. Furthermore, we have put together some
resources about demographic diversity in hiring and promotion processes.
Please feel free to use these materials for your purposes.
We also include our usual announcements of upcoming calls and recent
grants and awards, alongside reports from EASP-sponsored meetings and
previous grants. We also present a list of new members of EASP who we
warmly welcome to the association.
Finally, we conclude with some words of thanks to our former Executive
Officer Sybille Classen.
Looking forward to seeing you soon.
Best wishes,
The EASP Executive Committee
President's Corner
Dear colleagues, friends and members of EASP
The Executive Committee just had its spring meeting and this was also
the last meeting for outgoing members Malgorzata Kossowska, Monica Rubini
and myself. Traditionally, this meeting has two foci, preparing the General
Meeting and handing-over tasks to the ongoing EC members to smoothen the
continuation of their work, and the integration of the incoming EC members.
Next to these tasks there were also some major administrative changes and
task. We welcomed Wendy Rulkens as the new executive officer to the team.
She has started in April and picked up a lot of work and knowledge very
quickly. Furthermore, we have to prepare a number of mandatory changes (due
to our legal registration in the Netherlands) to our statutes and standing
orders. Once those are final, we will host an online town hall to explain
those to you and the full members will have the opportunity to vote during
the members meeting at the General Meeting.
The preparations for the General Meeting are on the way and we are
looking forward to seeing you all. Contrary to the indications gathered in
our last year’s survey, we received many more submissions and
registrations. Joanne Smith and her program committee had the demanding
task of selecting submissions in a very competitive context. I am sure that
they did an excellent job of selecting high quality research to be
presented, while also taking diversity of speakers and topics into account.
The General Meeting is going to be the first major conference for many
since the COVID-19 pandemic. Many junior scholars have not yet experienced
a large conference, for many colleagues conferencing has become a bit
“rusty” given the long break since the last General Meeting in Granada
in 2017 and many social psychology meetings being cancelled or move to
online formats. I would like to ask everyone to be kind to each other, to
respect everybody’s needs and boundaries. For some those needs may have
changed, for health and psychological reasons. Keep in mind that also in
general norms about what is acceptable behavior in society are developing
and changing. Please familiarize yourself with the code of conduct on the
website of the conference, as the Executive Committee, together with the
local organizers, is determined to make this meeting a great experience for
everybody.
The EC has seen a constant decline in meeting support applications
during the recent years, and especially during COVID, while at the same
time grant applications are increasing. EASP seeks to support both, grants
that are serving a smaller group of researchers, and meetings that benefit
a larger group and support building networks. Especially, junior scholars
are in need of the latter. The new EC will continue to monitor the needs of
our members, but we also want to encourage meeting applications. Summer
schools are the cornerstone of our activities and are seeing a high demand.
We received ten times as many applications for our five seats at the SPSP
summer school, and we decided to offer a Brief Summer School just prior to
the GM which is also fully booked. Soon, we will send out the calls for the
Summer School locations for 2024 and also the call for organizing the next
General Meeting. We hope for many applications as EASP can only be active
as an association based on her members’ contribution to common
goods.
For me personally, this is also a moment of farewell from most of my
active service to the association after over a decade - my term as
Editor-in-Chief at CRSP will end in 2025. In 2012, it started with the
organization of the General Meeting in Amsterdam in 2014, parallel to
bringing CRSP to life, and then as a member of the Executive Committee from
2017 onwards. I am proud and thankful to have been able to serve EASP for
so many years, I have learned a lot personally, and I hope that my
contributions benefitted the association. I am sure that the incoming
president, Nurit Shnabel, together her Executive Committee, will be shaping
EASP in her own way and makes sure that EASP remains what she is, a learned
society that feels to many as a family.
All the best,
Kai Jonas
Financial Management
Behind the scenes we are busy preparing EASP for the future, to develop
processes and management systems which help us to lead our association more
professionally and efficiently. During the last two years we invested a lot
of effort in developing a more professional management of our finances.
First, this was necessary due to new tax regulations in the Netherlands
where our association has been founded and where it is registered. Second,
our previous financial documentation was not yet fit for more professional
management. We are for example busy adding functions to our membership
database (e.g., linking new credit card paying systems to the database,
automatic way to remind our members of outstanding membership fees, members
can update their info online, online grant application). This will help us
to become more efficient, transparent, and reduce workload in the executive
office. We have also hired an external bookkeeping firm who helps us to
file our VAT declarations and submit our annual balance in line with the
required processes.
What does this mean for our members?
1. All expenses declarations need to be documented and
saved in a specific way. We are sharing this information with our members
who received grants and need to submit a financial report. Please follow
the instructions, otherwise we cannot process payment of grants. In a
nutshell: you need to provide receipts, invoices or documentation for all
expenses
2. Please check whether you have paid your membership
fee(s) for this year but also for the previous years. EASP needs
this income to support the activities of our members (e.g., grants, summer
schools, meetings).
3. Please pay your membership via credit card! All bank
transactions need to be manually added to the database.
EASP General Meeting
Dear EASP Members,
As the General Meeting in Krakow is quickly approaching the organizing
team wants to communicate their extremely high level of excitement. We are
looking forward to seeing you all in Krakow!
In the meantime we encourage everyone to follow us on Twitter
(@easp2023krk) and Facebook. We'll be posting useful information there over
the next two months (including how to recognize legit “obwarzanki” and
how to pronounce them - for now remember that “bagels” is the wrong
pronunciation). You can also regularly check our website.
If you have any questions or concerns let us know and we’ll mobilize
all our famous messenger pigeons to answer them quickly and
efficiently.
We also encourage everyone to book their flights and hotels as soon as
possible (you can find useful information about that on our website https://easp2023krakow.com/conference-objects-en/).
Finally, since there can be no news from Krakow without a poem of
Wislawa Szymborska, this time we want to highlight “Confessions of a
Reading Machine,” which shows that discussions of the role of AI were
present in Krakow long before ChatGPT
https://newrepublic.com/article/114035/confessions-reading-machine-poem-wislawa-szymborska
In short, come for the EASP conference, stay for the optimism about the
future of technology and anything else!

General Meeting 2023
Call for Proposals for a Special Issue of EJSP in
2024
Dear Colleagues,
EJSP (European
Journal of Social Psychology) invites proposals for a Special Issue to
appear in 2024. The deadline for proposals is June 10, 2023.
In developing proposals for submission, we especially encourage
applicants to consider their networks widely, and where possible include
researchers from under-represented regions both on editorial teams and as
potential authors. Ideally, we would like to see about 50% of the
contributions to the chosen Special Issue involving collaborations with
researchers and participants outside the over-represented areas of Western
Europe, North America and Australia. In line with our Editorial,
contributions should be based on scientific rigour, equity, respect, and
cultural sensitivity.
Potential Guest Editors should submit Special Issues proposals to our
editorial office (EJSPeditorialoffice@wiley.com)
by the deadline specified above.
The successful proposal will be selected competitively and on the basis
of a comparative evaluation of all submissions received by the
deadline.
Special issue proposals should contain the following information:
1. Proposed title of the Special Issue
2. Name(s) and contact details of Guest Editor(s).
3. A brief description of aims and topics covered, and a case made for
the interest in the topic among the readership of EJSP (300-500
words).
4. A case made that there will be sufficient interest in terms of
submissions on the topic, including any indication of authors who may be
willing to submit work on the issue (e.g., people who have contributed to
relevant recent symposia or thematic volumes, possibly including specific
names and affiliations of colleagues that have explicitly expressed
interest to submit their work to the special issue) (max. 300 words,
excluding the list of potential participants).
5. A brief explanation of what each Guest Editor will bring to the
editorial process (e.g., theoretical/methodological expertise, previous
editorial experience, etc.) (max. 200 words).
6. A reflection (max 1 page) on how diversity is captured within your
proposal.
7. A brief CV (max. 2 pages) for each Guest Editor.
Once commissioned, the Special Issue is expected to have an open call
for papers (which will be advertised in the EJSP and through the EASP
website and mailing list). Editors are, of course, also free to encourage
potential authors to submit a paper.
Submitted papers are expected to go through a rigorous review process
equivalent to normal EJSP peer review. Potential contributions co-authored
by Guest Editors are permitted, but they will be handled independently by
members of the EJSP Editorial Team; such submissions will be required to
pass the regular peer review procedure for EJSP before they can be
considered for potential inclusion in the Special Issue.
When submitting proposals for the 2024 Special Issue, Guest Editors
should keep the following time scale in mind:
-June 10, 2023: Deadline for special issue proposals
-June 30, 2023: Announcement of successful proposal, and call for
papers
-July 30, 2023: Deadline for expressions of interest from potential
contributors
-December 01, 2023: Paper submission deadline
-February 15, 2024: Provisional acceptance of papers (i.e., subject to
revisions)
-April 31, 2024: Revised final manuscripts due
Our best wishes,
Masi Noor, Caterina Suitner, & Thomas Morton
New Editors of EJSP
The Executive Committee is very happy to announce the results of the
selection procedure for the next chief editors of the European Journal of
Social Psychology. EJSP has been serving as the association's primary
journal ifor high quality, peer reviewed, original research in all areas of
social psychology for more than 50 years (since 1971). This tradition has
been carried on by the current editors, Thomas Morton, Masi Noor, and
Caterina Suitner, whose 3-year term will end at the end of 2023. We are
very happy to have been able to secure a fantastic team of new chief
editors. From January 1st, 2024, on, Marco Brambilla (Milano), Kim Peters
(Exeter), and Kai Epstude (Groningen) will serve as new editors in
chief.
"We’re delighted to become the next editors of EJSP. In this role, we
aim to build on the current team’s achievements in the promotion of
diversity in the editorial team (incl. associate editors and consulting
editors) and as a topic of research. We hope to make EJSP the platform for
a uniquely European perspective on diversity. We also aim to review journal
processes with an eye to innovations that could reduce the burden on
reviewers and decrease the time to publication. Finally, we are committed
to supporting the publication of open and transparent research. In the
coming months, we will assemble the editorial team to help us to pursue
these aims. We’re honored to be entrusted by the Executive Committee with
the Co-Editorship of EJSP."
 EJSP Editors 2024-2026: Brambilla, Peters,

Election of New EASP Executive Committee Members
Three new members will join the EASP Executive Committee in the summer.
We invited applications earlier this year and we are happy to share the
five applicants' profiles and vision statements with you. Please take the
time to read them. Further information about the election process will
follow soon.
Dr. Gülseli
Baysu
I would like to join the EASP Executive Committee. I have been a member
of EASP since 2013 and I presented at every general meeting since then. I
am a good candidate for this position not only for the match between my
research expertise and the EASP’s scope but also for the values this
association advocates: equality and diversity. I have a strong publication
record and extensive experience in editorial work, including most recently
as an associate editor in EJSP. I am also on the scientific committee of
the 19th General Meeting of EASP 2023 and currently organizing an EASP
small group meeting in Belfast in 2023.
I completed two PhDs in psychology, first at Middle East Technical
University (Turkey, 2007) and then at the University of Leuven (Belgium,
2011). I worked in Turkey first as an assistant professor, then as an
associate professor of social psychology (Istanbul Kemerburgaz University,
2011-2013; Kadir Has University, 2013-2018). I now work as a senior
lecturer of social psychology at the Queen’s University of Belfast
(2018-present). My major research interests include cultural diversity,
immigration and integration, and intergroup relations. Three recent
publications that represent my research are:
• Baysu, G., Hillekens, J., Deaux, K. & Phalet, K. (2021). How
diversity approaches affect ethnic minority and majority adolescents:
teacher-student relationship trajectories and school outcomes. Child
Development, 92(1), 367-387. https://doi.org/10.1111/cdev.13417
• Phalet, K., & Baysu, G. (2020). Fitting in: How the intergroup
context shapes minority acculturation and achievement. European Review
of Social Psychology, 31(1), 1-39. https://doi.org/10.1080/10463283.2020.1711627
• Uluğ, M., Baysu, G., & Leidner, B (2022). How does ingroup
identification predict forgiveness in post-conflict societies? The role of
conflict narratives. British Journal of Social Psychology, https://doi.org/10.1111/bjso.12608
As a scholar from Turkey who is currently an immigrant in the UK, I am
from an area of the world that is generally underrepresented in these
roles, and my research often focuses on those who are underrepresented in
psychological research. If I am selected for this role, I will do my best
to encourage scholars with underrepresented backgrounds to be more
represented in EASP. Increasing diversity and representation and promoting
more civic engagement among our (potential) members are among the relevant
issues that I would like to work together on the executive committee.

• A summary of academic positions, administrative experience, and
current research interests:
I have worked in academia for over 15 years, most of which has been
spent at the SWPS University, Faculty of Psychology in Wroclaw,
Poland, where I currently work. The main focus of my work is
dishonesty. Within this area, the dilemma between honesty and care as
well as the process underneath are of particular interest to me. My
research also tackles meaning motivation and how individuals can benefit
from meaningful work. I am a member of the Executive Committee at the
Polish Social Psychological Society, co-editor in chief of Social
Psychological Bulletin and member of the Scientific Board at the Institute
of Psychology, SWPS University. Through the execution of research
grants as well as the organization of conferences and workshops,
I have gained a great deal of administrative experience. My biggest
organizational undertaking was co-organizing the EASP Summer School
that was held in Wroclaw in 2022.
• The nominee's perspective on what are relevant issues for EASP and
its Executive Committee to consider
in the future:
From my perspective, a relevant issue that EASP could consider is giving
special focus to less experienced academics. I would like to encourage
EASP to promote short research internships that could advance
scientific development of young scholars. I believe that promoting
work-life balance in academia and fostering a supportive environment
are of the utmost importance.

representative of their work:

I completed my Ph.D. at the University of Heidelberg in 2000 and then
took up a temporary lectureship at the University of Mannheim. In 2002, I
was awarded a Post-Doctoral Scholarship from the German Research Foundation
(DFG) to advance my research for two years at New York University. From
2004 to 2008, I worked as a Lecturer at Tilburg University. In 2008, I
joined the Psychology Department at the University of Limerick (UL). From
2010 to 2013, I served as Head of Department when our department was young
and rapidly expanding. Since the beginning of 2020, I have taken up the
post again, this time for five years. I have also developed two master
programmes, served as the Course Director for each, and served as the
Department’s International and Academic Coordinator. I have made
significant contributions to European Social Psychology over the years: I
am currently an Associate Editor of the European Journal of Social
Psychology. In 2009, I organized the first Conference on Social Psychology
in Ireland (C-SPI) at UL. I represented Ireland on the European Social
Cognition Network (ESCON) Steering Committee and served as Chair in
2016-17. I organized two ESCON conferences in 2011: the Transfer of
Knowledge Conference in Sligo and an Expert Meeting in Limerick. I am an
internationally recognized social psychologist with expertise in attitudes
and persuasion, emotions, person perception, stereotypes, existentialism,
and self-regulation.
EASP is the most important organization to represent and lead European
Social Psychology. It facilitates groundbreaking research and applications
by integrating naturally rich, diverse European perspectives through
vibrant intellectual exchanges that facilitate international
collaborations. Its Executive Committee should: a) embrace and invest in
the dissemination of new, exciting developments while preserving European
perspectives; b) promote scientific rigour, Open Science principles,
theory-building and testing, and applications to address social issues; c)
support centres of excellence across Europe while partnering with scholars
and organizations worldwide; d) promote mentorship of junior scholars; e)
communicate the relevance of our research to the general public and
communities. As a member of the Executive Committee, my commitment to EASP
and expertise would contribute to an exciting future for European Social
Psychology.

Claudia
Manzi
I am Professor of Social Psychology at the Catholic University of
Milan, where I also chair the Social Impact committee of my Faculty
and the Gender Equality Plan Team of the Athenaeum. My research
interests are mainly related to the study of identity processes in
relation to the social context where individuals define and
construct their identity. Particularly, in the last years I have
dedicated my efforts on the study of stereotypes and discrimination
and on how they may affect a number of identity processes (such as
ethnic, national, gender, religious, and age identification; identity
motives satisfaction; identity integration). In parallel, since I
consider social psychology to be an important tool for producing social
change, I have been working as consultant for several companies,
ONLUS, national and international organizations. In this role, I
coordinated projects that aimed to enhance social inclusion and
diversity management, with particular attention to gender equality in
the workplace and inclusion of
adolescents from minority groups.
Since the very beginning of my career, I have felt a strong
identification with the European academic community represented by the
EASP for several reasons. First, since my PhD I have been working with
many different colleagues around Europe and, later in my career, I have
been visiting professor in many European Universities (University of
Sussex, University of Toulose Jean Jaures, University of Essex, Pomeu
Fabra Universitat Barcellona). Second, attending EASP meeting
and small meetings has always been a must in my conference planning. I
have always perceived the connection with the whole community as an
inspiration and invaluable enrichment of my research work. Now, I
would be more than happy to give something back to the EASP by serving in
its executive committee.
In particular, I believe that, if elected, I may contribute to the
association in two respects, that I feel the EASP should focus on in
the next future. First, the social impact of the social
psychology research. We are leaving unprecedent times and facing
social challenges of priority importance for European values survival
(war, ecological disaster, threat to democracy, raise of polarized
thinking, etc.) Social Psychology as a discipline was born to provide
answers to some of these problems and promote positive social change.
EASP is already committed to this effort and I think this should be
a priority of the Association for the next years to impact as much as
possible on the public opinion and on the institutions and
organizations where we live. Second, D&I promotion. I know EASP is
already committed to promoting diversity and inclusion and I think I
could help the association in this valuable effort.

I am currently an associate professor with tenure in the Department of
Social and Organizational Psychology in UNED (Spain). I got my teaching
position in 2012, after completing my doctoral thesis. For four years I was
the academic secretary of the department and I have also been part of
several commissions. My research interests focus on collective action,
prejudice, and extremism.
Perspective on what are relevant issues for EASP and its Executive
Committee to consider in the future:
In my opinion, the association should continue to work on increasing
representation and encourage the active involvement of members from
currently less represented regions. In line with the opinion article by
Sassenberg and Gómez (2021), I believe that we should incorporate new
evaluation criteria for the awards, but, above all, for scholarships and
access to training activities such as the summer school so that the young
researchers who lack funding or institutional support have more
opportunities for professional development and international
projection.
Vision statement:
Stand out as an influential and inclusive organization that promotes
Social Psychology as a science and as a tool for social transformation in
all European regions.

Diversity and Inclusion Survey
The EASP Executive Committee announced its commitment to enhance
diversity of people and ideas in the field, and to promote an inclusive and
respectful climate. This includes efforts to assess the current climate and
use this information to facilitate diversity and inclusion (D&I) in
EASP as well as in the field more broadly. For this purpose, we decided to
conduct a survey to learn more about your experiences in terms of D&I
in EASP conferences, sponsored events (e.g., our summer school) and
journals. This focus was chosen due to our wish to keep this survey brief
and because ultimately this is where we as an organization have the most
leverage to create changes. Our goals are to (a) invite our members, as
well as social psychologists who are currently non-members, to share their
positive and negative experiences in terms of D&I, (b) receive feedback
on current D&I initiatives (e.g., the scientific writing and publishing
workshop), and (c) provide suggestions to EASP executive committee on the
ways to increase D&I. The results of the survey will be shared in our
General Meeting in Krakow, as part of the D&I panel.
We are grateful to Dr. Maja Kutlaca (Durham University), who helped us
putting this survey together. Thank you in advance for taking the time to
complete it -

You are welcome to share the survey link with your colleagues who are
not EASP members.
Diversity Training Resources
As part of our commitment to diversity, we (Kai Jonas, Ola (Oladipupo)
Shobowale, and Nurit Shnabel) also prepared a short presentation (and a
video to walk you through it) about demographic diversity in hiring and
promotion in psychology. We hope that these materials will be useful for
those of you who want to learn about this topic or who are interested in
delivering a presentation about it (e.g., to inform hiring or promotion
committees in your institution). You are welcome to watch, use and adjust
these materials to your purposes.
You are welcome to download the presentation at the end of this page: https://www.easp.eu/about/sis/?.

Call for
papers: Special issue of the International Journal of Environmental
Research and Public Health on "The role of digital pro-social and
anti-social experiences on the people well-being and health"
Dear Colleagues,
We are happy to invite contributions to a forthcoming Special Issue on
the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health
(IJERPH) entitled "The Role of Digital Pro-social and Anti-social
Experiences on the People Well-Being and Health".
Despite the advancement of digital media studies increasing, their
application to improve peoples' well-being and health remains largely
untapped, as World Health Organization pointed out. Assuming that digital
media is not simply a communication tool, representing “real”
relational and symbolic contexts in which individuals and groups have their
social experiences, this Special Issue invites the submission of
high-quality empirical papers, reviews, and meta-analyses to advance the
understanding of the relationships between digital pro-social and
anti-social contents and behaviors and individuals’ and community
well-being and health, focusing on the contribution that social psychology
can make in this sense.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Online discrimination against minorities;
• Cyberbullying or social exclusion actions;
• New media and Web3.0 technologies as a proof of social support,
helping, and other pro-social behaviors;
• Benefits, challenges, and/or trends and issues related to new media
and Web3.0 technologies and pro-environmental attitudes and behaviors;
• Benefits, challenges, and/or trends and issues related to new media
and Web3.0 technologies and anti-racial, anti-sexist attitudes, and
behaviors;
• Benefits and/or challenges related to the use of new media and
digital technologies and collective actions.

Thank you Sibylle Classen
Sibylle Classen has supported EASP since 1987, for 33 years. At
that time Sibylle supported Amelie Mummendey (treasurer at that time)
to create an intelligent system to structure the financial management
of EASP. She has been the soul, heart, and memory of EASP for many
years. Sibylle has worked with 11 executive boards, has supported
the organization of 10 general meetings, and answered millions
of questions of our members. For many of our members she was the
first person they were in contact with when they applied for
EASP membership. Over all the years, the executive boards have been
very grateful that Sibylle would remember what needs to be done or
what has previously been discussed. Sibylle retired just before the
pandemic. The take-over could only be done online as traveling was not
possible.
Finally, we were able to thank her for all her support,
commitment, and heart for EASP last June! On behalf of EASP Nina
organized a surprise farewell weekend for Sibylle in Groningen, which
is close to Münster where Sibylle lives. Due to COVID restrictions we
kept the group small. Three previous EC members and former colleagues
who Sibylle has closely been working with from Groningen surprised her
on different occasions in Groningen, for lunch, a boat trip, a city
tour, or the dinner. We had a wonderful weekend, with lots of fun
memories of EASP. And we were finally able to hand over all wishes
from our members to thank her individually.
Thank you, Sibylle!
 Sibylle
farewell
