Job Role

This research project - ‘The impact of ethnic diversity on wellbeing and health’ - is an interdisciplinary Nuffield Foundation–funded programme of work based at the University of Birmingham. Its overarching objective is to take a longitudinal, collaborative, interdisciplinary and policy-focused approach to investigate how the ethnic diversity of local areas influences wellbeing and health, and how these relationships are influenced by positive and negative experiences of intergroup contact and threat. The project is led by Principal Investigator Dr Miguel Ramos and Dr Matthew Bennett at the University of Birmingham.

Main duties

Assisting, where relevant, in working with the principal investigator to co-ordinate research activities at Birmingham and the wider project team.

  • Working on a day-to-day basis with the Principle Investigator (Ramos).
  • To manage and analyse large-scale individual-level panel datasets (BHPS, UKHLS, NCDS).
  • To undertake quantitative research on diversity topics, using these datasets and appropriate quantitative methods.
  • To manage data for appropriate sharing and archiving, including taking appropriate care to ensure preservation of confidentiality where required.
  • To present research outputs in academic publications and at seminars and conferences.
  • To disseminate research findings for a range of research users.
  • To deal with any problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines.

Person specification

  • A Degree in economics, social psychology, political science, statistics, social policy, sociology, or a related discipline, with demonstrable evidence of training in quantitative methods.
  • A completed PhD in one of the above disciplines, with demonstrable evidence of significant quantitative work (candidates near to completion of their PhDs will also be considered).
  • Substantive expertise in diversity and health or related academic area.
  • Experience of research demonstrating an ability to manipulate and analyse large-scale panel datasets.
  • Experience with multilevel, longitudinal and structural equation modelling techniques.
  • Demonstrable quantitative analytical skills.
  • Demonstrable experience of use of appropriate statistical packages (e.g. STATA, Mplus, R).
  • Familiarity with contemporary Psychological and Sociological issues and debates.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of research team.
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly to different audiences, including non-specialist, non-academic audiences.
