Submission Deadline for Expression of Interest: August 7th, 2022

Understanding the coordination of attitudes in societies is vitally important for many of today's most pressing challenges (i.e., global warming, migration, social cohesion, peacekeeping). While shared attitudes have the power to unite individuals and mobilize collective actions on the streets and online, intergroup conflicts rooted in attitudinal disagreement can spread mistrust and polarization. Despite evidence demonstrating the importance of attitudes for such macro-level dynamics, relatively little is known about how attitude patterns emerge from social interactions and eventually translate into identities. This special section seeks to address these gaps and calls for research proposals that explore attitude-identity dynamics in pressing social contexts.

The main contribution of the special section will be to a) highlight the dynamic character of attitudes (e.g. as elements that are shaped by social interaction and that can act as strategic tools to pursue identity goals), b) to advance innovative and transdisciplinary methodological approaches suitable to research attitude-identity dynamics in different interaction contexts (e.g. lab, field, offline, online), and to c) foster the understanding the relevance of attitude-identity dynamics for social conflict and change.

To reach these goals, articles that correspond to one or more of the following categories will be prioritized:

1) Attitude-identity dynamics in social interactions

  • Manuscripts that explore attitude-identity dynamics in between-person interactions (e.g. face-to-face, computer-mediated) and in different social contexts (e.g. intragroup, intergroup).

2) Expanding the methodological toolkit

  • Manuscripts that help social psychologists to think “out of the box” by studying attitude-identity dynamics with new or transdisciplinary methodological approaches (e.g. Network analysis, Natural Language Processing, Agent Based Modelling…).

3) Attitude-identity dynamics in real-world contexts

  • Manuscripts that allow reliable conclusions about how attitude-identity dynamics develop in natural contexts and/or correspond to current societal challenges. We explicitly encourage submissions that focus on samples and/or contexts underrepresented in the field.

Submission Details:
We invite authors to submit expressions of interest to attitude.identity.dynamics@gmail.com not later than August 7th, 2022.
The expression letter should include a) a manuscript title, b) correspondence information, c) names and affiliations of all authors, and d) a description of the manuscript content (up to 600 words) giving key information about the research project and how it corresponds to the outlined aims of the special section. Please ensure that critical information (e.g. theorizing, design, method, sample characteristics, open science practices) can be inferred from the project description.

Invited full manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the EJSP author guidelines European Journal of Social Psychology (wiley.com) and uploaded through the EJSP online system ScholarOne Manuscripts (manuscriptcentral.com), specifying that submissions are for the special section on Attitude-Identity Dynamics.

Special Section Timeline:

Editors’ deadline for inviting full manuscripts: August 26th, 2022
Author deadline for full manuscripts: October 31st, 2022
