On behalf of the organizing committee, we are pleased to announce an EASP meeting entitled Deeply Divided Societies: Social Psychological Processes and Theorising, to be held between the 22nd-24th of May 2020 in Nicosia, Cyprus at the unique Home for Cooperation in the UN Buffer Zone dividing the two communities.

Social psychological processes involved in deeply divided societies (DDS), form the focus of this meeting. DDS are often characterised by geographical separation oftentimes coupled with scarce intergroup contact; contested historical narratives; long term and deeply rooted division between communities; internal displacement; unresolved transitional justice issues; lack of academic educational or academic collaborations due to contested statehoods. Divided Cyprus forms a prime example of such a society and thus an ideal context to host a meeting serving to advance our understanding of the social psychological processes in DDS.

This EASP meeting forms an academic platform for academics, postgraduate students, as well as activists to share their experiences, theorising, and research results on the appointed topic. We encourage submissions from those working in the context of ongoing or recently resolved conflicts.

Submissions may focus on:

  • Empirical studies deploying a variety of methods (e.g., field experiments, quantitative surveys, interviews, oral histories) conducted in DDS
  • Interventions conducted in DDS (alongside their evaluation if one is available)
  • Theoretical papers on topics related to psychological processes in DDS (e.g., intergroup contact, social identity, competitive victimhood, collective action; intergroup forgiveness)
  • Project initiatives addressing topics related to social psychological processes in DDS

We very much welcome interdisciplinary work as long it includes a social/political psychological angle and social developmental work focusing on the development of prejudice in children, and educational interventions aiming at overcoming division.

Submissions can be for one of the following modes of presentation: symposia, blitz presentations, or posters. There will also be invited keynote speeches and a workshop on Cyprus as a case study of DDS which the participants of the meeting can attend.
