Beyond the Blur: Bringing Focus to Self-Regulation Research
EASP Small Group Meeting, June 1–3, 2026, Graz (Austria)
Self-regulation is one of the most important skills people rely on every day. It helps us manage emotions, resist temptations, stay committed to long-term goals, and navigate social interactions effectively. This essential role makes self-regulation a cornerstone of social psychology.
However, the field of self-regulation research faces a significant challenge: it is fragmented by a multitude of theories, concepts, and measurement tools. Terms like self-regulation, self-control, self-discipline, and delay of gratification are often used interchangeably but refer to subtly different constructs. This lack of clarity hampers theoretical progress and the integration of findings.
Our EASP Small Group Meeting seeks to address these challenges by taking a crucial first step: mapping the current state of self-regulation science. We will identify the key constructs, explore contexts, review measurement tools, and assess interventions to pinpoint consensus, divergences, overlaps, and gaps.
Beyond academic exploration, this meeting has an equally important purpose: to build a community of researchers committed to making self-regulation science more effective and applicable through a common framework and unified language.
This collective reflection will be enriched by the contributions of three outstanding keynote speakers, Michael Inzlicht, Nicola Baumann, and Elena Fischer, who will bring diverse perspectives and spark dialogue throughout the meeting.
The meeting will take place in the beautiful Schloss St. Martin, a historic castle in the hills just outside Graz (Austria), offering an inspiring setting for reflection, collaboration, and community building.
