EASP Bulletin www.easp.eu     @easpinfo

Editorial

Dear Members, Colleagues and Friends,

We are rapidly moving toward the end of the fall semester. As usual, a very busy time for most of us, but also with a lot of inspiring meetings with students and colleagues, resulting in new research ideas and projects.

In this volume of the EBSP we have as usual a lot of news and interesting topics for our members. I want to draw your specific attention to some updates and changes in the member area (MyEASP). First, in this area you find a brief report of our Membership questionnaire, which was completed by a total of 85% of our members. We have also added some new functions and option preferences to this area. Sign-in instructions to MyEASP are provided below.

In the member area you can now explore some excellent new material (videos, slides and tutorials) from the Solid Science Training Workshop in Bordeaux, organized within the RKTS grant schedule by Hans IJzerman, Francois Ric, and Rick Klein. We are indeed grateful to this group for documenting the workshop so thoroughly and making it available to all our members. Moreover, I recommend our junior and early career members to take a look at the invitation from the ISPP (International Society of Political Psychology) to take part of their “Connections corner”. This a space where young scholars can pitch a research idea/proposal and it provides a place for new interdisciplinary and international collaborations to emerge.

As you probably know, there are strong forces in Hungary working for restrictions of the autonomy of the academy. Our Hungarian colleagues are asking us to show our support by signing a petition against the violation of academic freedom. You find a link to the petition below.

This bulletin also includes reports of all activities going on within the EASP, as well as announcements of several new ones. We strongly encourage all our members to continue organizing meetings, thinking of new formats, attending to the inclusion of early career researchers, a variety of methods and perspectives, and researchers from diverse regions. As usual there is also a section on new members.

Finally, we would again like to promote submissions of short pieces to our "Opinions and Perspectives" section. If you have suggestions on topics related to social psychological knowledge and resulting challenges and opportunities that you wish to communicate, and think are relevant for our members, please contact Torun Lindholm (tlm@psychology.su.se), the editor of EBSP.

On behalf of the Executive Committee
Torun Lindholm and Tina Keil

Results of the Membership Questionnaire

In a recent online membership questionnaire, we asked all EASP members to verify their contact details, to grant permission to forward contact details to journals sponsored by the EASP, and to indicate their preferences regarding if and how they would like to be listed in the member directory. A breakdown of responses is given in Figure 1. Thanks to all who supported and took part in the initiate.

From members that did not participate in the questionnaire, we unfortunately do not have the permission to forward contact details to publishers or to display their contact details in the website member directory. Consequently, full members that did not participate will no longer receive print versions of the EJSP and ERSP journals. However, all members now have the possibility to change their settings and preferences in the members’ area of the EASP website (see below for details). While members may update their journal preferences at any time, the settings will not take effect until the next time contact details are forwarded to journal publishers. This is typically done about once a year.

Changes to the Members' Area

The member area (MyEASP) on the EASP website has now been updated to reflect the outcomes of the membership questionnaire. If you log into the members area and choose “Member data” from the menu you will notice two new tabs named “Journals” and “Directory listing” (see Figure 2).

New Menu - MyEASP

Figure 2. New preference options in members' area

Selecting the “Journals” tab allows you to control whether the EASP can forward your contact details to the EASP sponsored journals. As previously mentioned, the settings won’t have immediate effect but will be considered the next time the EASP forwards contact details to the publishers.

Selecting the “Directory listing” tab allows you to control if and how your contact details are displayed on the EASP website. Although there is a setting for a public display of your contact details, there are currently no plans to integrate this on the EASP website. The settings for the display of your contact details for the directory in the member area on the other hand have been implemented. Changing of this setting takes immediate effect, which you can see by visiting the member directory.

Finally, just as a reminder, the "Email Settings" tab allows you do sign-up or opt-out of receiving EASP mailings. These include this Bulletin, but also the more frequent Mailserve news. If you have signed up for any these and mails keep landing in your spam folder, just whitelist bulletin@easp.eu and news@easp.eu in your email client.

How to sign-in to the Members' Area

Some members have expressed difficulties when trying to sign-in to the members area on the EASP website. Here, a short description of the sign-in process and its functionality.

To sign-in to the members' area go to: https://www.easp.eu/my-easp/

The username is always the email address we have on record for you. If you have forgotten your password, you can request a new one by clicking on the “forgot password?” tab. Here, enter your email address and click on the button “Get new Password”. An email asking you to confirm your request will then be sent to you. Make sure to check your spam folder in case you didn't receive an email. Once you click on the confirmation link in the email you are sent another email with a new, provisional password. You should now be able to sign-in to the members' area using the provisional password. Make sure to change your provisional password once you have successfully signed in. If you experience any problems, please contact Tina (media@easp.eu) or Sibylle (sibylle@easp.eu).

Petition for Academic Freedom in Hungary

Some of our colleagues/members from Hungary asked for our support, because the government denies faculty and administrators the academic freedom that is the guarantee for the autonomy of higher education.

“In the middle of the summer university break, the Hungarian Rectors' Conference was presented a draft decree from the Ministry of Human Resources and the Ministry of Justice. This proposal called for the abolition of the master program on Gender Studies. Such curricula are currently offered by the ELTE Faculty of Social Sciences and the Central European University (CEU). [...] The Network of University Teachers in Hungary protests any misguided or illegitimate governmental action aimed at harassing or banning the Gender Studies master program. It invites local and international universities and scientific organizations to join this protest to repel a gross effort to abuse and endanger academic freedom in Hungary.”

Please support our colleagues and sign the statement below:
Statement of the Network of University Teachers against banning the Gender Studies Program

Further information:

If you have contact to other colleagues and associations that could also support the protest please forward the email. Thanks a lot in advance for your support!

Connections Corner for Junior / Early Career Researchers

Each issue of the ISPP ECC Newsletter (consisting of a Spring and Fall issue, and reaching between 500-700 people) includes a ‘Connections Corner’ aimed at providing a platform for potential networking. The scope of this section has now been expanded by allowing individuals to use it as a space to pitch a research idea/proposal and to provide a place for new interdisciplinary and international collaborations to emerge.

If you are a junior or early career researcher with an idea / project / proposal that you would like to get others involved in, an existing project that you’d like to get some help with, or even potentially an idea for a panel for a conference, and you’d like to get others involved, please get in touch with Sandra Obradovic (S.Obradovic@lse.ac.uk) directly.
