EASP – European Association of Social Psychology

EASP Meeting on EMOTIONAL CRYING IN SOCIAL CONTEXT

15.09.2023, by Monika Wrobel

EXTENDED DEADLINE: 08 January 2024

Meeting location and dates: Lodz, Poland, April 24-26, 2024

Emotional crying is a common and inherently social phenomenon crucial to understanding a wealth of social processes ranging from social cognition to intergroup relations. The meeting aims to connect scholars interested in emotional crying by offering them a unique possibility to share and integrate their expertise, and ultimately build a more comprehensive knowledge of the social role of emotional tears and other crying behaviors.

We invite researchers representing diverse theoretical approaches, methodologies, and disciplines whose work will allow for addressing unresolved research questions that are of particular importance to social psychologists. Therefore, the meeting will focus on the following sub-themes:
1. Social Effects of Emotional Crying
2. The Interplay Between Inter- and Intrapersonal Effects of Emotional Crying
3. Methods in Research on Emotional Crying in Social Context
4. At the Crossroads between Biological, Clinical, Developmental, and Social Perspectives on Emotional Crying

We encourage both empirical and theoretical submissions (including work in progress, research ideas, and literature reviews) to be presented as regular talks (20 min + 5 min Q&A) or flash presentations (5 min).

We also invite attendees to participate in a workshop devoted to methodological problems encountered in research on emotional crying.

We are excited to include a key-note titled "Toward a new understanding of the functions of emotional crying: From catharsis to social connection" by Ad Vingerhoets (Tilburg University), one of the most renowned experts on emotional crying.

The meeting will take place from the 24th until the 26th of April, 2024, in Lodz, an atmospheric post-industrial city located in the very centre of Poland, with easy public transport connections to Warsaw international airport.

A fee of 100 EUR per participant will apply to EASP members (non-members: 150 EUR). Participation will be free for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers who are EASP members (non-members: 50 EUR). We will cover the costs of meals (including a reception and a dinner) and two-day accommodation for all participants.

We also offer the possibility of free online participation to scholars from underrepresented contexts whose in-person participation is impossible due to formal or financial reasons.

Abstract submissions (max. 1500 characters, including spaces) should be sent by December 15, 2023.

All details (including the submission form) can be found on the website https://emotionalcrying.weebly.com.

We hope to see you in Lodz!
