3-Year Post-Doc Position in the Moral Psychology of AI available at the University of Kent in Canterbury, UK

The School of Psychology at the University of Kent is seeking to appoint a Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to conduct research in moral psychology and trust in AI. This five-year project – TRUSTAI – draws on psychology and philosophy to explore how and when humans trust AI agents that act as ‘moral machines’.

Jim Everett is hiring a three-year full-time Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA, or "PostDoc"). The successful applicant will work part of the project’s team at the University of Kent along with Dr Edmond Awad (University of Exeter) to explore, 1) the characteristics of AI agents that predict trust; 2) the individual differences that make us more or less likely to trust AI agents; 3) the situations where we are more likely to ‘outsource’ moral decisions to AI agents; and 4) how these findings should be used to design AI agents that warrant our trust.

You will be based in Canterbury; a historic city located in Kent, Southeast England, less than one hour from London. A popular tourist destination, the city's medieval roots are seen in its well-preserved architecture, cobbled streets, and timber-framed buildings. As well as working closely with Dr Jim Everett and his lab at Kent, you will benefit from the exceptionally large broader social psychology group at Kent. With 15 tenured members of staff working in social psychology alongside numerous PostDocs and PhD students, you will be joining an exciting community of academics conducting world-leading research in many areas of social psychology.

Applications must be received by Friday 24th May, and full details of how to apply can be seen online at
