In each General Meeting year, EASP recognises the contributions of our members through a variety of awards. This year we have, for the first time, the Moscovici award, which aims to recognise the author(s) of an article, book, or book chapter that has made an outstanding contribution to theoretical development in social psychology (you can read more about the award here: www.easp.eu/about/awards/serge-moscovici-medals/

This award is selected by a selection committee that is theoretically diverse and chaired by the EASP President. This year the selection committee consisted of Leonel Garcia Marques, Sabine Sczesny, and Nick Emler, chaired by Manuela Barreto. The award was open to suggestions from members and we received a good number of excellent suggestions--thank you to all members who came forward with suggestions. You can be sure that all were carefully considered. We also considered additional papers proposed by members of the selection committee.

Each suggestion was considered on its own merits and without consideration of how many members had put it forward, or who had done so (in fact, only the President was aware of this information). It is of course hard to select one paper that can be seen as the best theoretical contribution ever, so this is not what we did. First, we recognised that the award cannot possibly acknowledge one best contribution—it can simply recognise one outstanding contribution. Second, to enhance comparability of papers and make our task more manageable, we limited the publication date to 2000, at the earliest. Among other criteria, we considered the breadth of the contribution, its relevance to various areas of social psychology, the quality of the research underpinning the contribution, and the extent to which the paper engaged with other relevant knowledge.

After much careful consideration, we are honoured to announce that the 2017 Moscovici award goes to our colleagues Andrea Abele-Brehm and Bogdan Wojciszke for their paper titled “Communal and agentic content. A dual perspective model.” Published in Advances in Experimental Social Psychology, 50, 198-255.

This is a truly outstanding piece of work that is fully deserving of this recognition. You will be able to hear more about this work at the next GM, in Granada, at the newly instated Moscovici lecture.

On behalf of the Executive Committee and the members of EASP, I wish to congratulate Andrea and Bogdan on this outstanding theoretical contribution.

Manuela Barreto, on behalf of the EC
